This guide teaches you how to turn off electrical power to make electrical repairs. First, locate the main breaker inside the electrical breaker box. The main circuit breaker is usually located at the top of the panel and is noticeably larger than than the rest of the circuit breakers. Electrical power first flows through the main panel breaker before reaching the individual circuit breakers. Flip the switch to the off position on the main breaker to turn off electrical power to the whole house. To turn off electrical power to individual circuits, locate the breaker that you are wanting to cut power to and flip the switch to the off position. Specific circuit breakers control appliances, lights and outlets on that circuit. To identify which appliances, lights or outlets are on a specific circuit, you'll need to individually flip the switches on the individual breakers to the off position until you find the one that you are trying to identify. When you've lost power to whatever you are trying to cut power to, you'll know that that circuit breaker controls that particular circuit. To turn electrical power back on, just flip the breaker switch back to the on position. Close the cover when you are finished.
