How To Remove a Broken Light Bulb
How To Remove a Broken Light Bulb
With so many lights in the average home, you're bound to run into a situation where one
of those light bulbs blows and as you go to change the light bulb, you twist the bulb to remove
it and it breaks, leaving you with a broken light bulb. Now you have to figure out how to
remove the broken light bulb without getting shocked. Below, we show you just how to do
that and how to do it safely.
- First, you want to make sure you turn off the power to the broken light bulb. If it's a lamp
fixture, you can just unplug the cord from the electrical outlet. If the broken bulb is in
an overhead fixture such as a ceiling fan, you'll need to cut power to that fixture from the
fuse box. Just make certain that no electricity is running to that broken bulb.
- Now that the electricity is off, you need to protect your hands from shards and slivers of
glass of the broken bulb. So grab a pair of leather gloves if you have some handy.
- Next, grab a pair of needle nose pliers and grasp the metal edge of the broken bulb's
base and carefully turn the base of the bulb counterclockwise until the broken light bulb is
free from the light socket.
- Wrap the broken light bulb base in a paper towel and dispose of it in the trash.
- Sweep up and/or vacuum any pieces of the broken bulb remnants.
