To get a fresh, clean bathtub you first need to know how to clean a bathtub correctly. Grime and soap scum build up fast on the bathtub surface and needs regular cleaning. Bathtub walls will also need the same attention. Whether you're cleaning a cast iron bathtub or a bathtub spa, the same basic principles will still apply. Most chemicals for cleaning bathtubs are safe for all bathtub finishes. There are some exceptions though, mainly for fiberglass & acrylic bathtubs which should not be cleaned with an abrasive cleaner.
Let's first start with protecting yourself from any chemicals you might be using to clean your tub. You'll want to protect your hands with a good pair of rubber gloves. You will need to ventilate the bathroom in which you are working to prevent any build-up of toxic fumes. This can be done by simply positioning a fan facing away from the bathtub to draw the fumes away from the work area.
If you're using an all-purpose cleaner to clean your bathtub, just spray the cleaner over the surface of the bathtub and allow the cleaner to sit for several minutes. Then you can rinse the bathtub cleaner off, either using the shower head or a bucket of clean water. If you're removing a heavy build-up of soap scum, lime, grime or water deposits you will most likely need to use a scrub brush after the bathtub cleaner soaks in. Scrub thoroughly the areas where build-up most likely occurs, which is around the bathtub drain and the corners of the tub. Again, once you are finished with cleaning the tub, rinse off the surface thoroughly.
